Port of Spain news - be always the first to know
Trinidad and Tobago must diversify its thriving petroleum-based economy to prepare for the eventual depletion of its fossil fuel supply and survive swings in global energy prices, the International Monetary Fund said. IMF economist Max Alier said the twin-island nation, where the energy sector accounts for 40 percent of the gross domestic product, should focus on improving the competitiveness of non-energy sectors while its oil-and-gas economy is booming. "Success of the government's economic diversification efforts hinges on adequately preparing the economy for the eventual exhaustion of energy resources," Alier said in a statement Friday from Port-of-Spain. The country is second-largest energy producer on the Caribbean Sea after neighboring Venezuela. It pumps out 150,000 barrels of oil a day and is the leading supplier of liquid natural gas to the United States. But Trinidad's non-energy deficit has widened recently to nearly 16 percent of the GDP as a result of tax cuts, growing subsidies and rising capital spending. Prime Minister Patrick Manning's office could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday. A former geologist for Texaco, Manning has said he does not believe Trinidad will suffer fuel shortages.
